Temperatures in Paris during the summer months can be quite unforgiving. And since Parisians don’t always get the chance to head out for the beach, Paris’ City Hall created the Paris Plages event! The idea is simple: along the Seine river, artificial beaches are installed, allowing both Parisians and tourists to feel the pleasures of the beach… without leaving the city!
The event began in 2002 with a single artificial beach installed in the Rive Droite (“right bank”, or north bank) of the Seine river. However, since 2006, the number of artificial beaches has increased, and several leisure and sports activities were also introduced, as well as boats for transportation of urban beach holidaymakers.
