Lisbon would not be the same without the grilled sardine, one of Portugal’s great traditional dishes!

The smell is unmistakable and the smoke rises through the air at great speed: the sardines are on the grill and ready to be served! Grilled sardines are one of Lisbon’s main culinary attractions and one of Portugal’s most typical meals!

GRILLED SARDINE

The sardines are grilled along with peppers and served on a bread or with potatoes and salad — a simple but tasty dish, especially when seasoned with quality Portuguese olive oil! Recommended accompanying drinks: cold white wine or beer.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

The best time to taste grilled sardine is the summer, or during the Lisbon Festival. This is the period when sardines are tastier and become omnipresent in local restaurants’ menus.
