Huambo is already over one hundred years old, and every year, the city celebrates its founding!
On September 12, 1912, when Angola was under Portuguese colonial rule, the city of Nova Lisboa (New Lisbon) was founded. After the country’s independence, the city was renamed Huambo, but the date of its original founding is still celebrated every year with official events, music, dance, and entertainment on the streets.
The celebrations take place in several locations on the streets of the city centre. The programme varies each year, so you should get speak to the locals to find out what’s going on.
